our history

Founded in 1871 by Father John Christopher Drumgoole, our mission began with a simple but powerful purpose: protect and uplift the most vulnerable. An immigrant who arrived in America alone at age nine, Fr. Drumgoole turned his own hardships into action—creating a refuge for homeless and orphaned children in New York City.

By 1883, that vision took root on Staten Island at Mount Loretto, where children were not only given shelter, but opportunity. Through education, vocational training, and a safe, nurturing environment, thousands were equipped to build independent, meaningful lives.

Over time, the mission evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. In 2016, the organization officially became Catholic Charities of Staten Island, strengthening its reach and deepening its impact.

Today, we serve thousdands of individuals each day through a wide range of programs—from childcare and senior services to autism support and addiction recovery. While the needs have changed, our purpose has not: to provide hope, dignity, and opportunity to every person we serve.

Our Mission

Catholic Charities of Staten Island, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and affiliate of the Archdiocese of New York, has served the community since 1871—rooted in the vision of Father John C. Drumgoole at Mount Loretto.

Our mission is to meet people where they are and lift them to where they’re meant to be. Guided by the enduring values of justice, compassion, and human dignity, we provide critical support to individuals and families at every stage of life.

Through a broad network of programs—including early childhood education, services for individuals with developmental disabilities, family crisis support, immigrant resources, senior services, and our food pantry program—we work hand-in-hand with community partners to create pathways to stability, independence, and hope.
